Which EV Should You Avoid Buying in 2026?
If you're shopping for an electric vehicle, you've probably seen plenty of lists telling you which EV is the best to buy.
But there is another question that can be just as useful:
Which EV should you avoid buying?
The answer isn't as simple as naming one bad electric car and telling everyone to stay away. EV reliability can change dramatically between model years, software versions and even individual vehicles. A car with several recalls may be perfectly reasonable after the fixes have been completed, while a seemingly attractive used EV can become a headache if it has unresolved battery, charging or electrical problems.
That is why this guide takes a slightly different approach.
Instead of calling an entire brand or model "bad," we're looking at EVs that currently deserve extra caution because of reliability scores, documented recalls, charging problems, battery concerns or repeated owner complaints.
Consumer Reports' current reliability data is particularly useful here because its reliability survey covers areas such as EV batteries, charging systems, electric motors, climate systems, electronics and build quality rather than simply asking whether owners like their cars.
And some of the 2026 results are surprising.
What Makes an EV Worth Avoiding?
Before getting into specific models, it helps to define what "avoid" actually means.
I wouldn't automatically reject a car because it has had a recall.
Modern cars have recalls. EVs are no exception.
The bigger warning signs are things such as:
- Repeated recalls involving the same underlying problem
- Battery or charging-system failures
- Problems that can leave the vehicle undriveable
- Expensive components failing outside warranty
- Persistent software and electrical problems
- Very poor predicted reliability
- Major quality problems across multiple model years
- Poor dealer or service support in your area
- Rapid depreciation combined with expensive repairs
There is also a very important distinction between a new EV and a used EV.
A new vehicle with a known problem may already have a factory fix available. A used vehicle might have the same problem, but you need to verify whether the recall was actually completed.
The EVs I Would Approach With Extra Caution in 2026
Based on current reliability data and documented issues, several EVs deserve a closer inspection before you buy.
That doesn't mean every example is bad. It means I would do more homework before handing over my money.
1. Chevrolet Blazer EV
The Chevrolet Blazer EV is one of the clearest examples of why buying a new-generation EV requires some caution.
Consumer Reports' 2026 reliability data places the Blazer EV near the bottom of its reliability rankings, with reported trouble areas including the EV battery, climate system, electrical accessories, in-car electronics and other components.
The reported reliability score was only 19 out of 100 in the Consumer Reports ranking summarized for 2026.
That doesn't mean every Blazer EV will fail.
It does mean I would not buy one without checking the specific model year, recall history and software updates.
The Blazer EV has also had recalls. For example, certain 2024–2025 vehicles were recalled after an incorrect repair under a previous recall could leave the rear parking-brake wiring harness vulnerable to damage or corrosion.
That's the kind of history that makes a used example worth inspecting carefully rather than buying simply because the price looks attractive.
Before buying, check the vehicle identification number through the NHTSA recall database.
Would I automatically avoid the Blazer EV?
No.
If I found a heavily discounted Blazer EV with all recalls completed, strong warranty coverage and a good service department nearby, I'd investigate it.
But if another EV cost roughly the same and had a substantially stronger reliability history, I'd probably choose the safer option.
2. Rivian R1T
The Rivian R1T is a fascinating truck, and this is a good example of why a vehicle can be impressive and still have reliability concerns.
The R1T gets a lot right. It has excellent performance, serious off-road ability and a design that feels genuinely different from traditional pickup trucks.
But Consumer Reports' 2026 reliability data puts the R1T near the bottom of its overall ranking, with a reported reliability score of 18 out of 100.
Reported problem areas include the EV battery, electric motors, climate system, steering and suspension, electrical accessories and body hardware.
Some owner-reported problems have also involved things such as door-handle motors and tailgate hardware.
For an expensive vehicle, that matters.
The problem isn't necessarily the electric drivetrain
This is an important point.
When people hear "unreliable EV," they often imagine a battery suddenly dying.
In reality, reliability complaints can come from many other systems.
Windows, cameras, screens, door handles, climate systems, suspension components and software can all create expensive service visits.
That's particularly important with a technology-heavy vehicle like the R1T.
Who might still buy one?
Someone who specifically wants an electric adventure truck may still decide the R1T is worth the trade-off.
But if your priority is simply dependable transportation from Monday to Friday, I would investigate more conservative alternatives before buying one.
3. Genesis GV60
The Genesis GV60 is one of the more luxurious EVs on the market, but luxury doesn't automatically mean reliability.
Consumer Reports' 2026 data gives the GV60 a reported reliability score of only 21 out of 100.
Reported problem areas include the EV battery, charging system, drive system, climate system, brakes, electrical accessories and in-car electronics.
Battery-related reports are particularly worth paying attention to because replacing major high-voltage components can be very different financially from replacing a conventional 12-volt battery.
Would I avoid every GV60?
No.
The GV60 can still make sense for someone who values its design, interior and technology.
But I would strongly prefer an example with complete service records, confirmed recall completion and substantial remaining warranty coverage.
4. Kia EV9
The Kia EV9 is one of the most interesting three-row electric SUVs, but its relatively new platform also means buyers should pay attention to reliability history.
Consumer Reports' 2026 reliability ranking gives the EV9 a reported score of 24 out of 100.
Reported trouble areas include the EV battery, charging system, body hardware, electrical accessories and in-car electronics.
Some reported battery issues have involved cells within the battery pack requiring replacement.
For a family SUV, this matters more than it might on a second car.
If your EV is the vehicle you depend on to take children to school, commute to work and travel long distances, reliability should probably rank higher than having the newest technology.
5. Kia EV6
The Kia EV6 is another EV I'd inspect carefully rather than automatically dismissing.
It has been praised for its performance, fast charging and distinctive design, but Consumer Reports' current reliability data identifies several problem areas.
The reported reliability score is 25 out of 100, with issues reported around the EV battery, electric motors, charging system, climate system, electrical accessories, brakes and body hardware.
The integrated charging control unit is particularly important because charging problems can turn an otherwise excellent EV into a frustrating ownership experience.
The EV6 is a good example of why reliability and specifications are different things
On paper, the EV6 has many features EV shoppers want.
- Fast DC charging
- Good range
- Strong acceleration
- Modern interior
- Excellent road-trip potential
But a specification sheet can't tell you how frequently owners encounter electrical or charging problems.
That's why I would look at reliability data alongside range and charging speed.
6. Older Nissan LEAFs With Level 3 Charging Concerns
The Nissan LEAF is one of the pioneers of modern mass-market EVs, so it would be unfair to describe the entire model as an EV to avoid.
However, some specific model years deserve attention.
NHTSA documented a 2025 recall involving certain 2021–2022 Nissan LEAF vehicles equipped with a Level 3 quick-charging port. The lithium-ion battery could overheat during Level 3 charging, creating a potential fire risk.
Nissan's remedy involved a battery software update, and owners were advised not to use Level 3 quick charging until the remedy was completed.
That's an excellent example of why buying a used EV requires more than checking the price and mileage.
Should you avoid every used LEAF?
No.
But if you're considering a used 2021 or 2022 LEAF with a Level 3 charging port, verify the VIN and make absolutely sure the applicable recall has been completed.
Use the official NHTSA recall search rather than relying on a seller saying, "I think everything was fixed."
What About the Ford Mustang Mach-E?
The Mustang Mach-E is another EV where I would check the exact vehicle history rather than writing off the entire model.
The Mach-E has had multiple recalls over its production life.
Current recall records include issues involving the park mechanism, high-voltage battery contactors, electronic door-latch behaviour, exterior lighting and other components.
For example, certain 2022 Mach-E vehicles with extended-range batteries were recalled because high-voltage battery main contactors could overheat and cause loss of drive power.
More recently, certain 2021–2023 Mach-E vehicles were included in a recall involving a rear differential pinion shaft that could fracture.
These recalls do not mean every Mach-E is unreliable.
They mean VIN-level recall checking is essential.
If you're shopping for a used Mach-E, I would not buy it until I had confirmed that all applicable recall work had been completed.
Why You Shouldn't Automatically Avoid an EV Because of a Recall
This might sound strange in an article about EVs to avoid, but it's one of the most important points.
A recall is actually one of the better things to discover before buying a used car.
Why?
Because you can check whether the manufacturer has identified the problem and whether a remedy exists.
A known problem with a free factory repair can be less concerning than a mysterious problem that isn't covered by warranty.
For example, if a manufacturer recalls a vehicle because a software update is required and the update has already been installed, the situation is very different from buying a car with unexplained battery faults.
The Real Red Flag: Unresolved Problems
If I were buying a used EV, unresolved problems would worry me more than the number of recalls on the model.
I'd be particularly cautious if the seller says:
- "The warning light comes and goes."
- "The charger sometimes works."
- "The software just needs an update."
- "The battery range seems a little low."
- "The dealer said it's probably nothing."
- "The recall hasn't been done yet, but it's not serious."
Those are not answers I'd accept when buying an expensive used vehicle.
Check the Battery Before Buying a Used EV
The battery is obviously one of the most important parts of an EV.
But don't assume that an older EV automatically has a bad battery.
Battery degradation happens gradually, and the amount varies according to chemistry, climate, mileage, charging behaviour and vehicle design.

Before buying a used EV, I would want to know:
- Estimated battery health
- Remaining battery warranty
- Whether the vehicle has experienced battery repairs
- Whether the car has outstanding battery recalls
- Whether DC fast charging works normally
- Whether the displayed range makes sense for the battery state of charge
Charging Problems Are a Bigger Deal Than They Look
Imagine buying an EV with 300 miles of advertised range.
Sounds great.
Then you discover that the vehicle occasionally refuses to start a DC fast-charge session.
Suddenly, the 300-mile range doesn't feel nearly as useful.
Charging reliability is one of the most underrated aspects of EV ownership.
A vehicle that charges consistently at home and on road trips can be dramatically easier to live with than one that requires repeated troubleshooting.

Don't Confuse Battery Degradation With Battery Failure
These are two very different things.
Battery degradation means the battery gradually loses some usable capacity.
Battery failure is a much more serious problem.
A five-year-old EV that has lost some range can still be perfectly useful.
An EV that intermittently reports battery faults, refuses to charge or loses significant power is a completely different situation.
That's why a used-EV inspection should look beyond the number shown on the dashboard.
Owner Reviews Are Useful — But Don't Treat Reddit as a Reliability Database
Real owners can reveal problems that don't appear in a specification sheet.
Someone might mention that a particular charging fault happens repeatedly, that a screen freezes, or that a replacement part took weeks to arrive.
Those experiences are valuable.
But there's a catch.
People are much more likely to post online when something goes wrong than when everything works normally.
If 50,000 people own an EV and 500 people complain about a problem online, you can't automatically conclude that 1% of owners have that problem.
The sample is biased toward unhappy owners.
That's why I prefer using owner experiences as a way to identify what questions to investigate, then checking those questions against reliability surveys, recall databases and manufacturer information.
What Consumer Reports Data Can Tell You
Consumer Reports' reliability methodology is useful because it doesn't treat "reliability" as a single mechanical issue.
Its survey categories include areas such as:
- EV battery
- EV charging
- Electric motor
- Climate system
- In-car electronics
- Electrical accessories
- Build quality
- Brakes
- Steering and suspension
That matters because modern EVs have fewer traditional engine components, but they still contain a large amount of electronics and software.

First-Generation EVs Deserve Extra Attention
One pattern I would pay attention to is whether a vehicle represents a manufacturer's first attempt at a particular EV platform.
Being first isn't necessarily bad.
But new platforms often introduce:
- New battery systems
- New software
- New charging architecture
- New thermal-management systems
- New electronic control modules
- New manufacturing processes
There can simply be more opportunities for early-production problems.
This doesn't mean you should never buy a first-generation EV.
It means I would be much more interested in the reliability of the specific model year.
Model Year Can Matter More Than the Badge
Suppose an EV had a serious charging problem in its first production year.
The manufacturer redesigns the component the following year.
Now someone says:
"That model is unreliable."
Maybe the first model year was problematic, but the newer version isn't.
That's why a blanket statement such as "never buy Model X" is usually too simplistic.
A better question is:
Which model years and configurations have the strongest reliability record?
What I Would Avoid When Shopping for a Used EV
If I were buying a used EV today, these would be bigger red flags than the name on the hood.
1. An unresolved safety recall
This is an easy one.
Check the VIN before buying.
2. Battery warnings
Any unexplained high-voltage battery warning deserves professional inspection.
3. Charging faults
If the seller says charging is "sometimes weird," don't ignore it.
4. Very low range compared with expectations
Range depends on weather, speed and driving style, but an unusually low range deserves investigation.
5. A complicated ownership history
Multiple owners, accident repairs and missing service records increase uncertainty.
6. No remaining battery warranty
This doesn't automatically make the EV bad, but it increases your financial risk.
7. Poor local service support
This is easy to overlook.
A reliable EV can still become frustrating if the nearest qualified service center is hundreds of miles away.
Should You Avoid an EV With a Low Reliability Score?
Not necessarily.
A reliability score should influence your decision, not make the decision for you.
For example, if an EV has a poor predicted reliability score but comes with a long factory warranty and is being sold at a huge discount, some buyers may decide the risk is worth taking.
Another buyer may value peace of mind more than saving money.
Neither decision is automatically wrong.
Think About the Cost of Being Wrong
This is how I would personally evaluate a questionable EV.
Don't just ask:
"How likely is something to go wrong?"
Ask:
"What happens financially if something does go wrong?"
If the potential repair is a minor software update, that's one thing.
If the potential problem involves a major battery component, electric motor or high-voltage charging hardware, that's another.
This is especially important once the vehicle is outside its factory warranty.
EV Reliability vs EV Running Cost
One reason people choose EVs is lower energy and maintenance costs.
That advantage is real in many situations, particularly for drivers who can charge at home.
But a lower charging bill doesn't help much if an unexpected repair wipes out several years of savings.
That's why I recommend looking at both sides of the equation.

What About EVs With Excellent Reliability?
The purpose of this article isn't to scare people away from electric cars.
Quite the opposite.
The EV market has some excellent vehicles.
The lesson is simply that you shouldn't assume every EV is equally reliable just because it has an electric motor.
Some models have mature platforms and strong reliability records.
Others are still working through early-production issues.
Your job as a buyer is to tell the difference.
My EV Buying Rule for 2026
If I were buying an EV in 2026, I'd use a simple five-step process.
- Check reliability data.
- Check every recall for the exact model year.
- Check battery and charging history on used vehicles.
- Confirm warranty coverage.
- Compare the total ownership cost, not just the purchase price.
This takes more time than walking into a dealership and choosing the EV with the biggest range number.
But it can save you a lot of trouble later.
So, Which EV Should You Avoid Buying?
There isn't one universal EV that everyone should avoid.
But there are definitely EVs I would approach with extra caution in 2026.
The current Consumer Reports reliability data puts the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Rivian R1T, Genesis GV60, Kia EV9 and Kia EV6 among the lower-rated EVs for predicted reliability, with issues reported across areas including batteries, charging, electronics, climate systems and electric motors.
Certain model years of other EVs also deserve attention because of specific recalls. The Ford Mustang Mach-E, for example, has accumulated multiple recalls covering different model years and components. Certain 2021–2022 Nissan LEAFs have also been subject to a recall involving Level 3 charging and potential battery overheating.
But I wouldn't take those facts to mean that every example of these vehicles is a bad purchase.
The better strategy is to avoid the specific problem — not blindly avoid the entire badge.
My Biggest Warning for Used-EV Buyers
If I had to give one piece of advice to someone buying a used EV, it would be this:
Never buy based only on the price.
A ,000 EV can be a fantastic deal.
It can also be a ,000 problem.
Check the VIN. Check recalls. Check battery health. Test charging. Look at the service history. Make sure the warranty is understood.
And if something doesn't feel right, walk away.
Final Verdict
The best EV isn't necessarily the one with the longest range or fastest acceleration.
And the EV you should avoid isn't necessarily the one with the lowest review score.
The smartest purchase is the vehicle that gives you the right combination of reliability, charging convenience, battery health, warranty protection, price and real-world usefulness.
For 2026, I'd be particularly careful with EVs that have poor reliability predictions, unresolved recalls or a history of expensive battery and charging problems.
I'd also pay close attention to the model year rather than assuming every version of a vehicle is identical.
Finally, remember that reliability is only one part of EV ownership. Before you buy, calculate what the vehicle will actually cost you to charge and operate.
